We have established that an influencer’s social fitness is dependent on their online presence. This can be quantified through 2 key metrics – engagement and reach. Knowing what they are, calculating them, and boosting them are crucial to tracking your online social fitness.
Social Media Reach
An influencer’s utopia is when everyone they intended to target with their online content would see their posts. But the fact is, not all of your followers will see every post you publish, and you’ll probably only reach a small percentage of your overall potential audience. The measure of this concept is what is referred to as REACH.
The expected number of social media users who may encounter a social media post is known as social media reach. The number of followers, fans, subscribers, connections, and visibility are ingrained into your reach.
Moreover, it is an actionable metric because reach is directly impacted by time (your audience’s most active hours) and content (your audience’s taste regarding your post).
How to calculate it?
Reach is difficult to calculate manually since each user should only be considered once (for a more accurate number, use a social media listening tool).
You can get an idea of how many people have viewed your social media post since it went online through Page insights. To measure your reach for a post, divide the reach by your total number of followers and multiply by 100 to get your post reach percentage.
Post reach percentage = Measure post reach/total followers * 100
3 Tips to boost your social media reach
- Master the 80/20 rule. 80% of your content should be meaningful and informative, while the remaining 20% can promote brands or products. The 80% will bring in new followers and create trust, and the 20% will convince them to purchase what you’re offering.
- Become an optimization pro to set up your social profiles for better visibility. Knowing the ins and outs of these elements is key if you want to be a social media superstar.
- Do not always create content that has an expiration date. Sprinkle in some humor, shock, or awe with evergreen content to attract viewers even with old content.
Social Media Engagement
An engaged audience responds to your content with likes, shares, and comments.
The amount and frequency with which audience accounts connect with your account are referred to as engagement. An engagement rate is a number that shows how engaged your audience is with your content. Every social media platform will collect an engagement measure that is cumulative of more minor interactions like likes, comments, and shares. Many platforms offer other statistical variants or different naming standards, such as Retweets vs. Shares. A good engagement rate is between 1% to 5%. The more followers you have, the harder it is to get a higher engagement rate.
How to calculate it?
These are the most popular formulae for calculating social media engagement rates.
- Engagement rate by reach
ER reach = total engagements per post / reach per post * 100
- Engagement rate by posts
ER post = Total engagements on a post / Total followers *100
- Engagement rate by impressions
ER impressions = Total engagements on a post / Total impressions *100
- Engagement rate by views
ER view = Total engagements on video post / Total video views *100
3 Tips to boost your social media engagement
- Longer, more insightful captions can help you connect with your followers and create better engagement. Although not every caption needs to be a storytelling opportunity, consider your social media captions as a method for your followers to learn more about you or your company.
- Reply to as many DMs and comments as possible. The Instagram algorithm considers who’s content you interact with the most and displays that person’s content more frequently than other posts. The more your audience engages with your content, the more it will appear in their feed.
- Videos create more engagement than photos on social media. Whether posting reels or Live videos, start posting more video content. Also, add text to videos because they increase the viewing time further.
If you don’t reach enough people, you won’t be able to have a high engagement rate. On the other hand, you need many followers to have a good reach. Once you’ve built up a loyal following, you’ll need to keep giving them quality content for your reach to translate into engagement. For obvious reasons, both metrics are equally relevant. For influencers to get the best outcomes, they must blend their social reach and engagement.
